TGS Hates Women

Is this where you got your V-Card punched? What?! No! Does this look like the make up room of a clown academy, no!

‘TGS’ in this instance being ‘The Girlie Show’, a programme within a programme, presented by Tracey Morgan playing himself. Kind of. Let’s say a vastly exaggerated, inflated version of himself. Not to be confused with the Sarah Cawood and Sara Cox-fronted garish ladette nightmare of the same name from Channel 4 in the late 90s.

The premise of this one is that TGS gets called out by a feminist blog for being misogynistic. Liz Lemon seems to want to prove this wrong by hiring Cristin Milioti playing herse- Ok, she doesn’t play herself at all. She’s a brainless and overtly sexualised bimbo (which later actually proves to all be an act. So maybe she *is* playing herself?!).

Look, whoever’s playing themselves or not doesn’t matter. Joan of Snark is based on a real-life website made by women and aimed at women*. They’ve switched the ‘Still Without Airbrushing. Still With Teeth’ strapline to ‘Perhaps correct. Definitely exhausting’. Which seems like a bit of a backhanded compliment but I still find funny, whether it’s meant to be mean or not.

Now, the logo for Joan of Snark is visible in the show, but it’s a little bit rubbish (sorry to whoever made it – it just looks like it was done a bit last minute), so what I’ve done here is given it a rebrand using the real-life counterpart’s design sensibilities. As the episode was broadcast in 2011, I reckon that’s entirely feasible. So it’s largely some font work but I’ve also carried over the female symbol from the O in Joan from the original.

On an entirely unrelated note – big shout out to Jane Wiedlin for forever being Joan of Arc in my mind.

*I actually don’t know whether the whole payroll for Jezebel is an all-female deal, but all past editors have been women, so this is a bit of a guess.
